Big win midweek
Roe Rovers turned the tables on Maghera on Thursday night having been second best to them on the previous Saturday when Rovers stole a point. There was no debating the points here though. Rovers started very brightly and Maghera were missing a few for the tricky 6.30 away midweek trip. Rovers were soon in the lead when Danny Quinn, back from injury got on the end of a pin point cross from Brendan "Foxy" McGonigle to head home. Maghera were trying to play a very high line and Rovers got caught offside a few times before Quinn burst through from deep to make it 2-0. McInnes was doing brilliantly in the centre of the park winning the ball and feedng the deep runs. Nicholl and Quinn both burst onto another through ball moments later with neither sure who to take charge. Quinn did so and shot wide. Nicholl then was through but went too wide and hit the side netting. O'Kane followed up with more of the same as finishing was proving difficult for the home side. The old campaigner McGonigle showed then how when he scored a cracking 3rd for Rovers before the break. Maghera started the second half well and struck the upright with a terrific shot from Sergeant and then Ferris pulled off a great save. O'Kane scored number 4 after Quinn played in a great ball with the outside of the boot. Maghera then suffered a blow when after an accidental collision between the ref and a player the player lost his cool and started giving off to the referee. Despite his team mates efforts to stop the rant he persevered and was shown a red. This threw Maghera into disarray and despite uping their game and playing well with 10 men Rovers were breaking with pace and numbers. Paddy Logue became more and more influencial and he burst into the box only to be upended and then grabbed by the throat resulting in another ed card being shown. The keeper protested by standing and leaning against the post and Tweedy Nicholl gladly sotted away the penalty on his 50th appearance for Rovers. Logue was the inspiration for a powerful finish as the extra men freed him from his defencive role. He burst down the left and pulled back for substitute Timmy Douglas to score having just returned from a lenghtly lay off. Holmsey and Logue combined well down the left and again and Quinn was on hand to tap home for his deserved hatrick and a final score of 7-0.
